Even though Creedence Clearwater Revival hailed from the San Francisco area, the band's soul, which was steeped in R&B, rockabilly, blues, and stripped-down rock & roll, made it hard to believe they came from anywhere but the Mississippi Delta. At that time, Bay Area rock was dominated by bands like the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jefferson Airplane, whose idea of economical arrangements and a tight rhythmic pocket hardly existed. John Fogerty, the band's lead vocalist/lead guitarist, brought a kind of passion to rock & roll that few recorded artists have ever delivered. Not only that, but his songwriting contributions to rock have unquestionably placed him in the ranks of American music legends like Chuck Berry, Willie Dixon, and Carl Perkins. Creedence's rhythm section, with Stu Cook (bass), Doug Clifford (drums), and Tom Fogerty (rhythm guitar), made every note count, doing for rock what Booker T. and the MG's did for Memphis soul.
