Formed in May 1999 - Seether (origionally known as Saron Gas) emerged onto the South African rock scene and rapidly established themselves as one of South Africa's top emerging bands. Comprised of three talented musicians - Shaun Welgemoed [vocals/lead guitar], David Cohoe [drums] and Dale Stewart [bass/backing vocals] - Saron Gas shared influences in International bands - Black Sabbath, The Deftones, Creed and Silverchair.
All three musicians began music at an early age and have played in a variety of different bands prior to the formation of the rock trio. Saron Gas create music from self-experience. The vocals, written by Shaun Welgemoed, actively depict real life encounters, which further allows an audience to follow and relate to the band - a strong reason for their ever-growing fan base. The music is realistic, with great diversity per track - shaping the hard rock sound.
Power, strength and emotion are three words which aptly described musicians - Shaun, Dave and Dale - and aptly summate |

their musical creations. Saron Gas were destined to be South Africa's biggest and most profiled rock export. The band singed to Musketeer records in September 2000. Working with top South African producer Brian O’Shea, the band spent two months in studio, rewriting and shaping material. The result is the top selling debut album release – “Fragile”.
‘’Fragile’’ featured a re-recorded version of top hit "69 Tea", with newly written second single – “Fine Again”. “Fine Again” has to date been well received by national radio – and reached number 4 on the 5FM national Chart. The band actively toured the South African live rock circuit – with great response. December 2000 saw Saron Gas embark on the “Fragile” tour – a 14 day National tour of South Africa to promote the debut album release. Saron Gas then concluded an exclusive 7 album artist deal with US label: Wind Up Entertainment. Wind Up are best known for their success with Creed, Finger 11 and Drowning Pool, and are rated as one of the top independent rock labels in the United States. Under their new contract, Saron Gas agreed to change the band's name to Seether.
Upon arriving in America, Seether began working on their second album "Disclaimer". Disclaimer featured some of the songs which appeared on "Fragile" while also introducing 6 new songs. It could be described as a new step and development in the sound of the band.
Unfortunatley Dave Cohoe (drummer) could not stand to be away from his family and friends. He was forced to choose between his carreer and his family. This lead to him leaving the band and returning to South Africa. Nick Oshiro replaced Dave Cohoe as drummer for Seether and fit in with the rest of the band right away. Shaun made the decision to go by the name "Shaun Morgan" as he felt that "Welgemoed" would be difficult for people to learn / say.
The band has continued to progress and change since the release of Disclaimer. Dave Cohoe has moved on after shooting the fine again video. In his place arrived Kevin Soffera, an extremely talented individual who has been a valuable asset to the group.
Along with Kevin came Pat Callahan, a second guitarist who has added to Seether, making their overall sound more substantial and full sounding. Seether's music is spreading like wildfire and will continue, with Disclaimer having recently been certified gold the band is growing into a powerhouse on the world music scene. |
